In an effort to promote more sustainable use of energy, United States Agency for International Development (USAID) designed a comprehensive program in energy efficiency and renewable energy, "Armenia Energy Efficiency, Demand-Side Management and Renewable Energy Program (EE, DSM and RE Program)" being implemented by Advanced Engineering Associates International (AEAI).
The stated goal of the Program is:
"To identify and realize substantial benefits for Armenia's economy and individual Armenians from increasing energy efficiency and developing Armenia's renewable energy resources".
The broad objectives are to:
Increase economic and environmental efficiency in the energy sector by demonstrating the cost-effectiveness of integrated solutions to electricity supply and heating demand.
Identify more diversified energy sources both by reducing electricity as a rational approach to replacing new supply and by identifying economically viable renewable energy resources.
The specific activities under the Program are designed to:
Expand knowledge and experience in Armenia of the benefits and technologies available to increase energy efficiency and to access renewable energy supplies
Implement a number of in-country demonstrations and investigate and evaluate means by which Armenia can finance the expanded application of energy efficiency technologies.
Continue support for developing a local energy service industry and energy service companies.
The overall objective of the Program team is focused on:
Creating a market demand for EE and RE services providers
Creating employment for EE and RE services providers
Strengthening ESCO's as an instrument for meeting this demand.
